2. PUBLIC SAFETY
2.1 SAFETY TIPS
2.1.1. WHEN TRAVELING BY BUS OR AIRPLANE
When exchanging currencies, do so at authorized exchange establishments or banks only.
Avoid carrying your passport or travelers checks, and if they are lost or stolen, contact the police department immediately.
Use large, colorful luggage tags that make them easy to identify on the airport luggage conveyor or at airline ticket counters.
Keep an eye on carry-on baggage on the bus or plane.
If you are carrying a laptop or notebook computer, don’t leave it unattended while you buy a snack, visit a store or make a phone call. Thieves follow their victim and strike at slightest distraction, often leaving behind a similar carrying case filled with magazines or other objects weighing about the same as a laptop. Most never notice until it’s too late.
On buses, sit close to the driver or the employee making change.
If you have children with you, be extra cautious.

2.1.2. ACCOMODATION TIPS
Store anything of value in the hotel safe, including passports and return plane tickets.
Do not open your hotel room door until you have identified the visitor. Keep your door locked at all times. Do not open the door to employees who offer unsolicited services; contact management.
Do not change money with baggage handlers, agents or strangers who approach you at airports or at bus-or-railway stations.
Only use taxi drivers who have personal, easily-visible identification. Do not use taxis that are not at an official taxi stand.
Source: www.policiamilitar.mg.gov.br/portal-pm/dicas.action
2.1.3. ON PUBLIC STREETS
Do not nor walk alone on dead-end streets, alleys nor deserted areas. Be extremely cautious when unknown people approach.
Do not hang purses or cameras on the backs of chairs or place them on the ground.
Do not reveal your personal information to anyone unknown, even to someone who may be traveling with you in the same group.
When using a credit card, do not let it out of your sight. Demand that it be used in your presence and check the vendor’s copy before signing it.
Avoid carrying your passport or travelers checks with you. If they get lost or stolen, contact the local police immediately
Avoid using expensive jewelry and do not flash large sums of money.
During transit, constantly watch your luggage. Use large, colorful luggage tags, so you can easily identify your bags on airport luggage conveyors.
